About ACCA
The ACCA Qualification is a highly-regarded accountancy qualification. In order to become a qualified chartered certified accountant and use the designatory letters "ACCA" after your name you need to complete:
- 14 exams (exemption can be claimed in nine exams)
- Three-years' relevant practical experience requirements
- A Professional Ethics module
ACCA's Members, who are known as Chartered Certified Accountants, are employed in industry, financial services, the public sector, or in public practice. With statutory recognition in the UK and Ireland it has the authority to license its members to work as registered auditors. In the UK, it also authorises its members to undertake insolvency work. Outside the UK, ACCA's are recognised under the EU's Mutual Recognition Directive and in many countries around the world.
ACCA offers four core qualifications:
- A Technician Level qualification provides a comprehensive introduction to accountancy (CAT)
- A Professional Qualification enabling members to reach the highest level in accountancy (ACCA)
- A Bachelor of Science in Applied Accounting which is centered on the needs of employers for practical, professional accounting BSc (Hons)
- A Masters in Business Administration designed to broaden business understanding and enhance strategic decision making (MBA)
How to Register
- You need to register with ACCA as a student in order to take the exams.
- Registration can take place any time but please note that if you wish to take part in specific exam sessions then the following deadlines to register with ACCA apply:
June Exams − register by 31 December of the previous year
December Exams − register by 15 August of the same year
Deadlines may be earlier in some countries where ACCA has a Joint Examination Scheme with a local accountancy body.
- ACCA offers a number of entry routes for studying towards the ACCA Qualification, designed to take into account equivalent local qualifications and previous educational achievements. Check entry requirements and exemptions available on ACCAGlobal
- Remember to send supporting documentation with your registration form including proof of identity and photocopies of previous academic qualifications as proof of minimum entry eligibility or for claiming exemptions
- Please allow up to six weeks for ACCA to process your registration form
Entry Routes
ACCA offers various entry routes, depending on your age and previous academic qualifications.
- Pofessional Examination Route
- 2 passes at GCE A' Levels (grades A-E) plus 3 passes at GCSE/GCE O Level (grades A-C) in 5 separate subjects including English and Mathematics
- 2 years B.Com / BA / BSc from a recognised University or
- Intermediate Examinations/ Higher School Certificate at 50% or above can be accepted as a substitute for O' Levels
Step 2 (Examination)
Pass Fundamental & Professional stage (total 14 papers) within 10 years from the date of the first eligible examination session
- Mature Student Entry Route (MSER)
- 21 years old or above
- Must pass papers F2 and F3 within two years from the date of the first eligible examination session
- After passing, the student will then be transferred to the ACCA Professional Scheme
Step 2 (Examination)
Pass the remaining Fundamental & Professional stage (total 12 papers) within 10 years from the date of the first eligible examination session
- Access to ACCA via CAT qualification
- No formal qualification required to do the CAT Course
- After completing CAT, student will be transferred to Skills Module of ACCA Professional Qualification
Step 2 (Examination)
Pass Skills Module & Professional stage (total 11 papers) within 10 years from the date of the first eligible examination session
Step 3 (Ethics Module)
The aim of the professional Ethics module is to give you exposure to a range of ethical perspectives. Ideally, this should be completed before, at the same time or soon after completing paper P1, Professional Accountant, but must be completed before applying for membership
Step 4 (Practical Experience Requirement)
Gain a minimum of three years' supervised, relevant work experience in order to achieve 13 of the performance objectives– all nine Essentials and four from 11 Options for membership. You can complete either before, during or after completing the examinations (there is no time limit within which this experience should be gained). Gain the experience in any business sector or combination of sectors (e.g. corporate sector, public sector or public practice).
Claiming Exemptions
Relevant degree holders from ACCA-accredited institutions may be exempted from all nine exams within the Fundamentals Level and register directly at the Professional Level. Degrees with some relevance may also qualify for exemptions. For details, refer to ACCAGlobal Exemption Support
Examination Structure
With up to ten years to complete your studies, you take ACCA exams when it suits you – you choose the pace. You also have the option to select papers based on International Accounting and Auditing Standards and, in certain countries, variant papers based on local law and tax. You may also claim exemptions from certain exams, depending on what other qualifications you have gained.
